Well I have not said that McCartney is a musical genius, only that if anyone in the Beatles was to be considered a musical genius then for me it would be McCartney.
I would disagree with you on who might have been the better guitarist, Lennon's lack of timing is renowned. For me the songs that were Lennons or more Lennon are on balance the ones that I prefer, so I agree there. Others might prefer McCartney so maybe there's not a lot in it. However virtuosity on an instrument(in rock terms McCartney is on bass), or the ability to write a catchy (or not so catchy)ditty does not a musical genius make. A musical genius might be better than his peers on an instrument, but not necessarily.
I suppose everybody has their own idea of a musical genius, and my yardstick when measuring if someone is up to the genius mark, is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. I think anyone who knows anything at all about Mozart and music recognises that Mozart was a musical genius.
So up against the abilities of the bold Wolfgang, I don't rate Lennon's musical abilities as genius. I don't really think I can class McCartney as one either, but along with Zappa they would be two from rock that I might put forward for consideration....maybe for a sub genius category.
