Why would McCartney be a musical genius but not Lennon? It was Lennon who wrote the best songs in the band - especially up to around '67 or so. Lennon was the better overall guitar player, too, not to take anything away from Paul, who still was very a good guitarist. They both could play many different instruments, even if John didn't show off that talent as much as Paul did, since that was Paul's role in the band. They both were clearly musical geniuses, with John just as much as Paul was, period!
