RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: Brian Jones, not a virtuoso?

If I can go reply to your points in the order you made them in your last post.........

No I'm not joking, the examples you gave are all examples of a man playing competently. There is nothing approaching virtuosity in any of the playing. There is nothing particularly complex or technically difficult either, and certainly there are and have been rockers around who could play certain of these instruments with considerably more skill, gusto, not to mention flair.

Again, the number of instruments that Jones could get a tune out of has never been the issue here although I have given my thoughts on that. We were discussing musical genius, and latterly, virtuosity on an instrument. I have also given my thoughts on those subjects.

I have given you the place to start if you want to begin to understand virtuosity on an instrument(guitar), what it sounds like, what it looks like even. Since you believe that Jones' recorder playing on Ruby Tuesday may possibly be the finest recorder playing 'period.', then maybe for virtuoso playing on that instrument I could invite you to listen to any of several virtuosos on that instrument. You can listen to them play works written for the instrument by Handel, Vivaldi(concerto in C minor is a favourite) Handel etc. I like young Lucie Horsch's playing.

So that I believe is the best way to show you how/why Brian Jones's playing was not virtuoso on any of the examples you gave i.e. by giving you the chance to make a direct comparison between Brian Jones' playing and that of recognised virtuosos.

I have given the names of a guitarist and a recorder player in the Classical tradition, there are names of many more that I could give on other instruments that Jones played, from other styles e.g. jazz, bluegrass.

I have another way of determining if Brian Jones's playing was virtuoso or not, with all that that entails. If I can play it, then it's certainly not virtuoso lol. Seriously though, if you were to make that statement about Jones' recorder playing in certain company, I would be very embarrassed for you.

Again you must have not understood what I have said about Jones. At no point have I said he played poorly(although I think I have heard at least one poor execution). At no point have I said that he wasn't a skilled musician. On the contrary, I have said the opposite namely that he was a talented musician, who's musical imagination and contribution I greatly admire.

You believe what Keith Richards says? Quick, somebody make a screen grab lol. Personally I don't believe a word that comes out of his mouth....oh the irony lol. Seriously, Richards was right to say that Jones had a talent for playing instruments, because he did, he was talented.

He probably was a one off in rock in that he was willing to use a wide range of instruments in the band's music. Not that other bands didn't use instruments not usually used in rock, but the extent to which Jones did I'm sure, in fact everybody's sure, made such a difference to the Stones pop sound, made them stand out.

I may indeed be clueless on the skills Brian Jones had, but not totally clueless, surely? I mean I can play some of his music, so I can't be totally without insight.

I feel it was a tad harsh of you to say that I'm clueless , but not to worry I shall overlook that slight(or I may throw in one of my own later, chuckle chuckle).

Sorry to have bothered you with so much nonsense my friend, and I'm also sorry if you felt there was a need to defend Brian Jones. I was certainly not attacking him, I don't think it was even me who introduced his name to this part of the thread. As I have said to you before, Brian Jones means every bit as much to me as he does to you (and I hope that wasn't a deliberate attempt a couple of posts ago to associate me with those who are anti Jones....or was it an old trick that just might work, eh Keno?), it's just that we don't agree on certain aspects of the man and his music. I have to say that I feel I take take a much more balanced, objective and indeed rational view of the Jones boy, but I dare say you feel the same about your position.

Finally, please leave out all the smart person stuff old son, I'm the past master at the art of condescending here.....no, don't even bother looking, I'm so good you won't even notice I've done it.

Seriously, been good talking to you, I too am a retired person, and have plenty of time for nonsense.
