RE: RE: Brian Jones, not competent enough?

If you want to say that Mozart was more of a genius then any other musician, fine, but that doesn't mean other musicians, or in this case, any rockers, weren't geniuses just because he was.

On the subject of Brian Jones and multi instrument playing. I think I have to say that being a multi instrumentalist does not necessarily make you a musical genius.

I agree, but you need to look at the entire scope of this. We aren't talking about a musician who can play guitar, bass and piano. There are many who can do this. But we are talking about a guy who could play over at least 30 different instruments, and whom could play all of them very well. I always remember that "over 30" number for BJ and figured they shouldn't ever say how many, since it's more then likely over 50 or more. Really, how many different instruments are there, and how many did BJ try to play? I only know there weren't any that he couldn't play. Any person being able to play that many different instruments well, is a genius.

Much as I admire the sounds Brian Jones added to the Rolling Stones music, I have never heard anything in his playing to suggest he was other than competent on his instruments.

Are you shitting me? I have heard a handful of anti Brian people make this totally ridiculous claim in the past, and now you. My question to you is, how can you say he wasn't competent enough on the many different recorded music he made in his short time around as a rock star? I know you heard him play his sitar on several different songs. Was he not competent enough on "Paint it Black"? I don't think anybody, ever came close to playing a sitar like he did on that song. Some in India said that nobody should ever play a sitar in that matter, and I say, why the fuck not?? He got a sound out of his sitar like no one else ever did. Yet you don't think he played it competently enough? Or how about when he played the recorder on "Ruby Tuesday"? It had to be the most beautiful sound made on recorder by any rocker, or maybe anybody else, period! Yet you say he wasn't playing it competently enough? Or how about when he played the marimbas on 'Under my Thumb", or on "Out of Time ", you say he wasn't competent enough on those 2 songs playing marimbas? Are you saying he wasn't competent enough playing the dulcimer on "Lady Jane", or on "I am Waiting"? Or his lead guitar playing on "The Last Time", or on "Get Off of My Cloud", or his slide guitar playing on several different hit songs, you say he didn't play the guitar competently enough? Or when he played piano or other keyboards, like his mellotron playing on "2000 Light Years From Home', or on "She's A Rainbow", that playing wasn't competent enough for you? Or his sax playing along with all the other wind instruments he played, or even how he blew harp, not competent enough? You don't really believe that statement you just made, do you? Or do I need to come up with more examples for you, there are many more out there, you know. How can you say he never was anything other than competent on any of those songs I just listed? When I asked the other 2 persons, be it years ago, who made this claim, I got no answer back. One thing good with you p is you do reply back at least. So please explain how he wasn't competent enough on the songs I just noted. If you now feel that he was on those songs, then what songs wasn't he competent enough on? I'll need several examples, since I know he was was competent enough on the songs I noted, and I think you, and anybody with ears, knows he was, too.

However maybe I need to lower my high standard of definition, and accept that all whom you have mentioned are, in fact, to be placed with Mozart in the musical genius category.

Yes indeed, now you are at least stating a truth. There are a lot more geniuses around than I think you realize, they may not be as great as Mozart was, but Mozart was more of a one of a kind, or more likely, one of few... kinda like Lennon/Mcartney were.
