RE: RE: RE: Brian Jones, not competent enough?

I have said that Mozart is the yardstick for me when considering if someone is a musical genius or not. Clearly I'm not saying other musicians can't be geniuses just because he was.

I can only restate that the amount of instruments one can get a tune out of is not a guide necessarily to genius. Anyone who has been playing any instrument for any length of time will get a note, a scale, or tune out of a whole array of instruments if put in front of them. How well and to what extent they play these instruments will come down to talent. Brian Jones as we have all heard, could compose nice little parts on a number of instruments, he was musically talented.

I'm afraid you have not understood what I was saying on the issue of competence. It's a pity that you didn't comprehend, because I'm sure on the evening of your teams victory at the football, you could have been doing better things than writing a long unnecessary paragraph in reply to some tosser half a world away.

What my sentence means, is not that Brian Jones wasn't competent, but that he was no more than competent on the instruments we have heard him play. Nobody will argue based on what they have heard, that Brian Jones was a virtuoso on any of the instruments he played (that all of us have heard).

There are as many examples of virtuoso playing on the instruments Jones played as you would want if you were of a mind to look. I could suggest for guitar Tatyana Ryzhkova, a modern player from the classical world. That is what virtuoso playing on the guitar sounds like.

I would not say that he could not have become virtuoso on a given instrument, but Jones' playing that we have heard, on any instrument, does not approach virtuoso. It's competent(mostly) playing for the style of music that he was recording.

That was an interesting article on your rocket man. I'm going to throw into the mix Prof Brian Cox the physicist darling of the tv world. He played with a band D:Ream, even got on Top of the Pops. I believe Albert used to draw a bow over the old cat gut, so maybe we've got a physicist band going here.
