I largely agree with all of that Fender Bender, and said so. For me Brian Jones' great contribution came from his musical imagination, just as for me McCartney was the 'musician' in the Beatles, at the time, Jones was the 'musician' in the Stones.
Interesting to note that in line with your thoughts on old school style etc, McCartney has said that he deliberately avoided learning to read the dots for fear that it might constrain him. Of course George Martin could read the dots so was able to transpose and arrange the Beatles musical ideas onto paper when required.
