Brian's vision was to assemble a band of English blokes who could play credible R&B and Chicago style blues, something that was not yet in the picture back in '62. He not only succeeded, but did so light years ahead of the competition. This was no accident. Yes it helped to have Mick, Keith, Bill, and Charlie on board, but none of it would have happened unless they had been brought together by someone with the level of passion that Brian had for this brand of American music. People can argue about virtuosity all day, but it mostly comes down to feel, and this line-up had it, and it was manifest in the massive success they enjoyed in the UK and shortly thereafter in the US. From '66 forward, Brian's contributions were less as a purist and more as an innovator. Creativity doesn't always require virtuosity, and in some instances the latter can actually get in the way. Just about everyone knows someone who insisted on doing everything "by the book" but never had much to show for it. Brian's use of sitar was not in line with Ravi Shankar or other Indian masters, but it was a revolutionary approach that broadened the scope of popular music. In my estimation, this is the true measure of artistic success -- coming up with a new original idea and making it work. Virtuosity is fine and is almost always impressive, but it usually requires adherence to strict technical standards, old school style.
