Yes I mentioned 'Joey' in this thread after you had asked me if I thought Dylan would put his reputation on the line after looking at the evidence etc before releasing 'Hurricane'.
My thought was that on the very same album Dylan put out a song that maybe did damage his reputation because it was ill judged. It didn't do huge damage to his reputation, but it certainly drew some deservedly harsh reviews.
Of course as you point out, 'Hurricane' was recorded to highlight Rubin Carter's plight. My point of course was that given 'Joey', Dylan's judgement has been shown to be fallible.
Again whilst unlikely given the timescales, and the fact that Carter has passed away, it may be that one day 'Hurricane' will be come to be seen as a case of poor judgement on Dylan's part. I suppose in much the same way as John Lennon's support for the Hanratty campaign I mentioned, was obviously a case of poor judgement. Of course he never lived to know it though.
