Thanks Keno, I understand, my confusion....until TM's post all I knew about the Carter case was what I heard in Dylan's song, and I guess I just accepted that version of events....seems like there is a whole other story though....I agree that if you are looking for historical accuracy then Hollywood might not be your best starting point...I'm sure a lot of films have benefited entertainment wise from a little licence though...most people know it's just a movie...I think the big deal in the Carter movie was that it was dealing at the time with a current issue, and was making a case for a frame up, when it would appear that there was a considerable body of evidence (two convictions), and any number of people who believed this evidence pointed to Carter being guilty...it would appear that against this the industry was feting Carter at an event, whilst the victims relatives, the people who most certainly haven't had justice, were protesting outside...I mean you can say that it was only a film and meant as entertainment...but, it was a film about a then current and controversial case, and it would be naive to think that a Hollywood production with a big name actor starring, wouldn't have an effect on public opinion(as indeed Dylan's song must have)....my point about eyewitness identification was, that it is not entirely reliable one way or the other...you wouldn't get a conviction on it alone, you would need other corroborating evidence...equally you wouldn't get someone released from police custody with eyewitness identification if there was other evidence that connected them to the crime.
