Well I think what it had to do with it, and maybe what I was asking was, do you think recording a song like that about somebody like Gallo was perhaps an error of judgement on Dylan's part? I think it was, and it may be that in the fullness of time 'Hurricane' will come to be seen as an error of judgement also. Bob Dylan is not infallible.
I suppose I'm thinking of the 1961 'A6' murders here in the U.K., for which James Hanratty was hanged. There was a high profile campaign involving many prominent people, which ran for years and years with the objective of clearing Hanratty's name.
Over time I think it just became accepted that Hanratty was innocent. You used to see just that sprayed on walls etc., 'Hanratty was Innocent'.
Of course come the advent of DNA testing, and lo and behold it is proved 'beyond doubt' that Hanratty was indeed guilty as found.
It might be unlikely now that Carter is dead that anything will change, but given that there is a body of people who are still pushing for justice, then it's not outwith the bounds of possibility that evidence that will prove 'beyond doubt' that Carter was responsible, may yet emerge.
