You just don't tell your fans not to write you and leave you alone - ever, unless you wish to see your career tank.
I don't know, it's hard to put down a Beatle, and as a kid I dug Ringo a lot and still like him today... but he had nothing at all to do with the success of the Beatles and nobody would have known who he was outside of Liverpool if not for the other 3 taking him into the band.
You don't have to read fan mail, but you accept it, or at the least, you don't tell fans not to write you! So many of us Beatle fans accepted him as the band's drummer even if he wasn't a cut above other drummers, if anything, he was a full step below many other rock drummers. The Beatles after 1965-66 would have been better with a hard rocking drummer. But Beatle fans still accepted him, yet today he comes across as not accepting the fans. That seems rude and very uncool to me (and not too smart a move, either).
