It is kind of a strange thing with the Beatles. They were really good, they were managed really well, plus their timing was excellent. It's the mania of it that I think is scary. George's "We gave our nervous system" comment never left me, especially after his attack and how that pretty directly led to his death. That's why I respect him so much. You knew to leave him alone, he lived his life to be left alone, but he wasn't an ass about it.
Again they deserve praise for their music, for being on top of the times they were a part of, but the blind adoration (or hate) of anybody is kind of frightening.
Elvis respected his fans a lot, but he kept armed bodyguards around him and was armed himself. Though he was always protected somewhat, the true protection started after a serious 1970 death threat where the FBI was called in. Of course nobody got shot, but the muscle was needed more than once. A guy with a sword even attacked Elvis on stage in 1973 and Elvis kicked him off stage while bodyguards tackled him before he could pull out the weapon.
People to this day put Elvis down for the guns and guards, and people who weren't there make it out like Elvis hit the guy for nothing. However the FBI had a dossier on the guy that attacked him and found out he was a criminal from South America, and unlike some of the tabloid books will tell you there was indeed a sword.
Frankly I wish John and George had the same "paranoia" and were here with us. I mean of course Elvis died anyhow, but not by some crazed attack. However I would say that part of the reason he took the drugs was because he couldn't walk outside his gate. It will make you seek some sort of escape.
