Earlier today I pondered on why Ringo endlessly says peace and love. I was curious when it started number one (anyone know). Number two I found it ironic that he started saying it when reports on his behavior toward others began to get kind of nasty. Well it seems you can't mildly critique any Beatle on that forum. Before I knew it the thread was locked. A few people saw my point, but a lot of Beatlemanics almost seemed to be crying that I was saying Ringo wasn't a deity.
Here's the gist of what I said.
Peace and Love has no meaning when you overdo it. The Beatles didn't go around like robots going "All You Need Is Love" 24/7. Had they done so, they would have robbed the song all of it's power. "Peace and Love" especially loses it's power since Ringo has changed a lot since the early seventies when he took up cocaine. The friendly guy who married Maureen is not the nasty one who left her. If anything his ego got worse since 1989 when he got sober. That's when he began calling himself the greatest rock and roll drummer in the world without any irony.
Again I got a thread closed on this Beatle worshiping Steve Hoffman form for making these rather mild points. People thought I was some Ringo stalker who couldn't get an autograph. When I stopped laughing at the thought, I realized that their not letting me reply that I was a normal Beatle record collector who didn't worship them as people, was censorship. Then I got rather pissed. I won't go back their again of course, but how do people get away with censorship in 2015?. They simply can't face Ringo became a fake with his peace and love bit, while personally becoming less and less kind in real life. I feel sorry for people who have a 75 year old stranger who wouldn't spit on them as a hero. Dig the music, be wary of the man. That stands for 95 percent of any public figure.
Yet it reminds me that the diehard fans are more "weird" than I care to know. Some are some literally living in Pepperland. I guess that goes for diehards for anyone. I just like buying records, reading books, and watching DVD's, the fan worship part I gave up with puberty. With my career I've talked to people who were my heroes, it's a lot of fun, but they are just people. People like Ringo who think they are more than human are treated behind their backs like jokes.
Would I sit and talk with Ringo over dinner about his music?, sure. Not that I would do anything to make that happen, but say if he read my Presley book and liked it, yeah I would talk to him on that level. Would I care to shake his hand, get an LP singed, and a photo for $100 hell no! I'm not 15. Yet Ringo would do neither of these things, we seriously would have better luck with Mick or Keith which says a LOT about his ego as he couldn't shine their shoes. And yes I like him musically in the Beatles and a SELECT amount of his solo work. Ah maybe having to sit through Thomas The Tank and Caveman back in my own diehard days...lol
