... I don't care how I stated that in my reply, as today it does look like I was being a bit rude in how I replied there and please understand I didn't mean to be. I was just trying to show how ridiculous a statement it is to be claiming that the Stones weren't hippies in the '60s and early '70s. But in looking back I just went about it in too much of a negative way, and I apologized for doing that. We all need to be positive here even when we disagree, and I wasn't doing that. Me stating that the Stones would be laughing at those who made the claim that they weren't hippies, could have been taken in 2 different ways, and I'm only realizing that now. I didn't mean that to be seen as disrespectful towards anybody here, yet I do believe Mick and Keith would be laughing at such a comment, since they were both hippies back in that day, but they won't have been laughing at anybody who would make such a comment about then as to them thinking those fans were fools, but only because they would realize that some of their current fans don't know who they really were in and around 1970 or so, nor know what was going on in those days. That was all I meant by making that claim, and all I was trying to say. But rereading this thread today I feel I didn't get my point across in the proper matter and again, I'm sorry about that. I didn't mean it to come out in that way, and even if nobody seemed to take offense to it, it bugs me this morning that my words didn't come out in the way I meant then to, so I take back how I stated that, even if I totally stand 100% behind my comments about the Stones being hippies.
I think the bottom line is that many younger people who were not born yet at that time, or were too young to remember what was going down then, don't have a clue what a hippie was verses a hippy. No, the Stones were't ever hippys, but they very much were hippies, and if I may quote JF in his reply, he noted this about the Stones "...the Stones did some of the same drugs as hippies and the counterculture and rejected the establishment doesn't mean they fit the definition you've got going in your head. " I don't think that he realized what he wrote there actually half proved my point about them being hippies!..., since back during that time, if you did those things, you were looked at as a hippie, and you were a hippie, since that was exactly what us hippies were doing! Back then we had the Straights, and the Hippies, that was it, and most of the baby boomers weren't straights. We wanted to be different than the WW2 generation who were the total opposite of us, and mainly they were all straight, anti drugs of any kind, pro war, anti free love, anti long hair, even anti free speech to some effect, and were very much pro-establishment. Most of the baby boomers were hippies if only for a short while, but some of us, including the Stones, were that way for such for longer time. If you don't know this, the reason the Stones were busted in the '60s, was because they were hippies, and many of us got busted for just that back then.
Again, while the Stones never wanted to be hippys, nor believed in flower power (other than maybe MJ a bit), they very much were and wanted to be looked at as hippies, and they were proud to be called hippies. The were anti-establishment, a part of the counterculture, pro drugs, anti-war, long-harried, pro free love, and pretty much all left wing, and if you were that way between 1967 and 1972, you were a hippie, and that's what the Stones were. If you were around and old enough during that time and were Stones fans, you know that was a fact, and to those who think otherwise and who weren't around yet, you need to start understanding better what did go down back then, and please stop telling your elders who were there, that we were wrong. We weren't wrong, we witnessed all of that, so who ever told you that BS about the Stones, was wrong.
