Rebellion, disturbance, individual cynicism. This is what the Stones more about. Definitely not just the sex and drugs. The Stones never bought into the ideals of the counterculture and also embodied a kind of masculinity that dealt more with forging your own independence through wandering and traveling. They were more about rejecting the establishment and "normal careers" and stamping/insisting on their own ways of doing things apart from respected, hegemonic manhood espoused by society. And the dark and more violent lyrics, to me at least, stem from when their ideals clash against those. I know Mick has said you always just writes from experience but I think they're a lot deeper than they get credit for. His two newest songs, however, were lyrically awkward, clumsy, forced, and generally substandard.
