RE: They absolutely were Hippies!

Now that 4 of you here in this reply have given most of the board's elders a good laugh, let me try to address and explain some of this nonsense being said here about who the Stones were and wern't .....

I'm sorry Keno, but you're wrong.

No JF, you are - and you weren't around in those days, either...! I on the other hand was, and lived the lifestyle and even got busted for it.... But hell, I half became a hippie back then because of the Stones! Now go and tell me I'm wrong on that! One of our other older posters commented once how off base you are sometimes in what you comment on here in regard to those of us who actually were around in the late '60s and early '70s. I can't be sure about the ages of the other 3 posting on this here, on if the Stones of that time were hippies or not, and I don't mean to be rude towards anybody... But I do know that you JF were long from being born yet during the time and weren't there to witness what a hippie or a hippy was back then or be there to have first hand knowledge of the subject matter. I'll also note than the other 3 posters seem to be saying that the Stones were never "hippys", without using that word, and for the most part that's true, but I never said they were. I said they were "hippies", and there is a difference between the 2.

The only thing that JF and others who were not born yet during that time can go by, is photos of them and their long hair, which doesn't mean anything at all as far as if one is a hippie or not today, but it did in the '60s and '70s. So there's 100% proof that all of the Stones at least looked 100% like hippies/hippys in the '60s and all the way up until 1974 when Charlie cut off his long hair. So there should be no counter argument to that fact what-so-ever. But yes, going by today's standards, just because one might look like a hippie, that doesn't mean one is, but that wasn't the case in the old days of the '60s and '70s.

If MJ, or Keith, or any of the Stones were reading this post thread today, they would be laughing at you Gassers who feel they weren't hippies back in the day! They flat out would be! As I noted, Charlie never was one, and some would say Bill really wasn't one either, as he was just trying to get laid and took advantage of the hippy moment while not being one himself. Now yes, as I also noted, Brian and Keith were punks too, and they loved being punks, Keith is still part punk to this day. But they both were also hippies, too. Yet I'm still surprised today by the final results of this Stones hippie poll taken a few years ago, asking which Stone was the most a hippie. The answer clearly should have been Jagger, but it wasn't. Plus why did Woody get so few votes when he should have landed in second place? I think in that case it was because the question might have confused those taking part in the poll, since no, Woody wasn't a Stone in the '60s, but he very much was a '60s hippie.

With all that stated, MJ was the only one in the band who was also a hippy, too.... and if I may add this in, since it was bought up without using the term "yippie", Keith was also a yippie, too, while the yippie moment was only just starting up around the time Brian died, or he maybe would had been one too. Now of course, the Stones were all anti-war (do any of you know how and why the lyrics to the song "Street Fighting Man" even came from?). But being anti war had nothing to do with being a hippie, and just a bit about being a yippie, while it totally had to do with being a hippy, yes, being a hippy would cover that for sure.

The last thing I haven't addressed yet here that came up above is that yes, the drugs you took, along with the lifestyles lead back in those says, did determined if you were a hippie, a hippy, or neither of the 2 in those days. If you did drugs and had long hair in those days, people called you a hippy!

All of the other Stones fell into being looked at as hippies back in those days, that's another fact, and more important, other than Charlie, they wanted to be known as hippies in the late and early '60s and '70s. Since this has come up and gomper asked the question, I got another article I wrote years ago for Yahoo News about this very question. Strange, this is the second time this week that something I have at my very old home page and like this comes up and covers something I had written about in the past. I don't like to even post links to my home page anymore since it hasn't been updated in years and is very much dated, with some of the links there now gone and no longer set, but since the question has been asked, that's where I parked some of my old Yahoo News articles. I should note that this one article was actually altered by me a few years after it was published by Yahoo News, so in a way it isn't the same article at all, but the main comments made in it is the very same and came directly from the article, it's just laid out differently on line today. Writing for Yahoo News back in those days was a bit different than say writing for a newspaper (which back then I was doing both). Unlike writing for a newspaper (at least a few years ago anyway) you had a choice from Yahoo News to keep the copyright to what you wrote and were paid less by them if you did that, while they paid you more if you gave them the exclusive rights to what you wrote and it became theirs. I never wrote anything for them that I let them have the copyright to, I just kept it all for myself and took the lesser paycheck. So anyway, here is the link to Hippie or Hippy?, which I know at least many of our oldtimers Gassers and lurkers have already read before.
