Actually, I just checked the lyrics (which I assume are correct) and it does go like this:
And here comes the bishop's daughter
On the other side
She looks a trifle jealous
She's been an outcast all her life
I did not know that this was about an actual person. I do think that when one critiques poetry, music, etc, that one finds multiple layers of meaning. And certain themes, metaphors, ideas etc bubble to surface and they kind if 'live on' with the piece even if the artists themselves did not intend these ideas to come fourth.
Another example of this outcast thing is found in Jumpin Jack FLash. I know the song's inspiration came from being surprised seeing a gardener outside a window at Keith's country mansion. They called him "jumpin jack". But the lyrics talk of someone who's had a pretty awful life and an awful fate. Only with this person, it's all right now... in fact it's a gas, for whatever reason.
