RE: Common themes in the Stones' music.

First, I'm surprised you didn't include sex and drugs, because that's what most many commentators said about the Stones for a good 25 years or so, and no, it wasn't true. They were just the greatest hard rock band ever, and to this day they keep that crown, even if maybe it's not 100% true anymore, but overall it still is and they're still a great little hard rocking band. It always surprised me that they never did a single heavy metal song, since they have always been hard rock first - yet never crossed the line into metal. I mean, the Beatles were not a hard rock band, they were a rock band who sometimes played hard rock, yet even they did a few metal songs - yet the hard rocking Stones never did even one.

You are getting your lyrics mixed up again gomper (which is cool). The song "Jig-Saw Puzzle" is a autobiographical number, Jagger wrote it about his then girlfriend Marianne Faithfull, and the band, too. Faithfull was a big fan of jig-saw puzzles, and as he put it, they were on the floor one nite solving one when the song just came to him. The line you got quoted incorrectly is where he is talking about the Stones, actually it was just Keith and Brian who he was referring to there - who he notes as "the outcasts", although Faithfull I guess was one too. The correct lyrics to that part of the song is:"Oh the singer, he looks angry, at being thrown to the lions, and the bass player, he looks nervous, about the girls outside, and the drummer, he's so shattered, trying to keep on time, and the guitar players look damaged, they've been outcasts all their lives" I always liked how he went tongue and cheek on Bill there in his description, as Bill was never nervous about any of the girls waiting outside their gigs for them. Bill was the main womanizer in the band at the time. Keith noted it best about Bill on this, that where back then Mick was more into sticking to his current girlfriend, Charlie his wife only, Brian slept with all the pretty girls, and Bill - well he didn't care how they looked, he slept with all the girls no matter how they looked, so back in the '60s, he had the most women in the band out of the group.
