RE: Keith vs BJ/Acoustic Guitar/VS poll/YS

Wow, I guess I'm in the minority here, but Keith all the way. And that's not to say Brian didn't contribute a great amount to the Stones, and started the band up, but... well Keith wrote the songs, plain and simple.

I mean, let's face it, the reason we're still listening to the Stones today is mainly because of "Satisfaction," first number one. That got the ball rolling thanks to Keith writing the tune, with Mick writing the words, and Keith's unmistakable lead guitar part. That's not to take away from Brian, Charlie and Bill, they do a great job laying down that motown groove, but Keith led the charge, also adding backup vocals.

Same thing with "Get Off My Cloud" a very important follow-up for their success to continue. And sure, Brian's lead guitar is great, but Keith wrote the song with Mick. Same with "19th Nervous Breakdown."

By the time you get to Aftermath, Jagger and Richards are just a songwriting machine. Brian becomes sort of like their George Harrison, adding little touches with unique instruments that really give the songs an extra push, and contributing to songwriting occasionally, but again, Keith and Mick are the writers.

I'll say that during those psychedelic years, Brian contributed a lot, writing Ruby Tuesday for example, but I've never been too keen on their pyschadelic period. By the time you get to Beggar's Banquet, it's clear Keith's contributing more, though Brian was suffering at that point.

I feel the same way about Keith and Mick Taylor. I love Mick Taylor's guitar playing, but his solo on the end of Can't You Hear Me Knockin in all for naught without those opening guitar riffs Keith plays. In the same way Brian added a lot to the psychadelic albums, I'd say Goat's Head Soup really turned out well because of Taylor, but again, you got Keith writing the songs, writer of Angie, their single, that puts him over the top.

Funny thing about Yellow Submarine, that was the first Beatles album I listened to as a kid. I still have fond memories of it, but I probably listen to it the least. I like Hey Bulldog, All Too Much, and some of George Martin's orchestra stuff is cool, but it's more of a soundtrack album with recycled material than anything.
