Brian in the first rock poll. No contest. For starters, without Brian none of us would even be here talking about this. There cannot be any single contribution to any band more important than getting that band started and making sure its music gets heard.
His importance to the band's music has been in large part marginalized during the decades since his death, to the point that some younger casual fans don't even know who he was. But real fans know that he played an essential role in developing the band's early sound. And let's not forget that he projected a compelling image at a time when it was all-important to the young teenaged girls who made up most of the band's audience.
No vote in either rock poll. I still can't pick one acoustic player over another. The two versions in the second poll are about even to me. The song is at best a "meh!" song to me.
"Yellow Submarine"... I had a hard time picking a rating for side 1. The title song costs one rating point because it was already available, plus I find it grating and usually skip it. The fantastic "Hey Bulldog" earns side one a bonus point so that all evens out. In the end, thing whole ting got an 8 from me.
Side 2 gets a generous 2. Yuk! Truth be told, I haven't heard it in a long time. I thought about listening to it before voting but in the end, I just couldn't bring myself to do it. Not when there is so much good music to listen to out there.
