Keith vs BJ/Acoustic Guitar/VS poll/YS

Thanks to tonight’s great Broncos game which I was watching (of course), and then the Mets extra innings WS game loss (which I only watched after the football game was over), by the time I got here to the domain, I was way late in getting the links to the new weekly polls up online tonight. So other than at the Poll Menu Page where the new links set automaticity, it was impossible to vote anywhere else directly in the new polls for almost 2 hours on the domain. I am sorry about that. But let’s now get this week’s new polls underway, starting off with week 847 of the Stones poll. This week’s question is: Keith Richards vs Brian Jones, from 1962 to 1968, who contributed more to the Stones?

vs.

Week 7, and the final week of the Keith VS polls, but not the final week of asking these matchup questions amongst the Stones, just the last week Keith will be involved in the question, and at 7 weeks, in the end he shows up the most in these questions. Jagger will be involved 6 times, MT and BJ twice each, and Ronnie once. Bill and Charlie haven’t been and won’t be a part of this question.

For this week it’s Keith and Brian, and we will cover in this question up until December of 1968. I didn't include 1969 since Brian wasn't really in the band anymore after February of that year and he died on July 3 of ‘69. So I felt it won’t be fair to include him in an entire year where he really wasn’t around but for 2 months.

Now for these 2 guys, I don’t really have to write up anything more here about them since you Gassers already know your feelings about them and I bet you’re ready to vote right now. Just remember, as we have been doing with these Keith VS polls, before we vote, we look at everything before we go to answer this, from their image, to their guitar playing and any other instruments they played in the studio, how they played live, and songwriting too, even if the Glimmers didn't allow BJ (or any of the other lads) to be credited on songs, it’s a known fact that he did help write several songs while in the band, either with all of the band members together (he was credited on the early Nanker Phelge songs, but not on any other ones after that), plus what he wrote the music to with Bill on PIB, and also along with Keith on RT.

So who between the two contributed more to the band during most of the 1960s? To make your pick, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll to vote.

vs.

In last week’s Stones poll we asked: Keith Richards vs Mick Taylor, from 1969 till 1975, who contributed more to the Stones? MT won this one by a large margin. To see by how much, just click here: Stones Weekly Poll - week 846 . I’ll also add the results of this poll to the new Stones VS Page 2. Just click on “Band Members” when you get to this page to see the results.

Over at the Classic Rock Poll, it’s week 489, and as usual, we will vote in 2 different polls for the week. In the first, regular poll, we will ask a new question which is: Who was/is the best Acoustic Guitar player in rock? (Part 3 of 4)

Week 3 of asking this question, and we have the final 32 new names to choose the top picks from this week before we get into the final part next week. Once again, some great acoustic guitar players to choose from!

To vote in this week’s first rock poll, just click on: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

For this week’s VS poll we will ask this question: 'Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo': Johnny Winter's original vs Rick Derringer’s original, which version is better?

Rick Derringer wrote "Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo" in 1970 for Johnny Winter, for Winter’s then new album Johnny Winter And, which Derringer (along with a few of his old bandmates from The McCoys) appeared on every song, playing rhythm guitar for Winter. This take of the song wasn't released as a single, but it was well known and liked regardless. Then 3 years later, Derringer recorded a solo version of this song for his solo debut album All American Boy. His solo version became a hit, peaking on the Billboard Hot 100 at #23.

Derringer and Winter have both recorded several live versions of this song, including one that Johnny did with his brother Edgar. Now since Derringer was in Winter’s band and appears on Winter's take of the song, we have the rare occasion for the VS poll where both versions of the song for this poll are looked at as original versions.

As usual, you can listen to both songs before you vote at the voting page, just remember, we are voting on the music only, not the videos. To cast your vote in this week’s VS poll, click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

In last week’s first Rock poll we asked: Who was/is the best Acoustic Guitar player in rock? (Part 2 of 4) This poll question continues to be very popular indeed, with once again last week receiving some nice big voting tallies!

Unlike in Part 1 where only the top 6 got enough votes to be included in Part 4, in Part 2 the top 12 made the list thanks to ties for the last spot. Those 12 picks are: Brian Jones (8.1%), Neil Young (7.6%), John Lennon (7.1%), Jerry Garcia (6.6%), Tom Petty (6.6%), Duane Allman (6.5%), Ian Anderson (6.3%), Justin Hayward (6.3%), Harry Chapin (6.2%), James Taylor (6.2%), Nancy Wilson (6.2%) Steve Howe (6.2%). You can check out the full final results by clicking on: Classic Rock Poll 1, week 488.

In last week’s Halloween VS poll, we asked:'Spooky': Classics IV's original vs Atlanta Rhythm Section’s cover, which version is better? The voting was somewhat close, but a clear winner was still picked. Just click here to see the final results: Classic Rock VS Poll, week 488. You can also check out the final results at the VS results page 2, at the Classic Rock site, just click on: VS Page 2, List Page 10.

As usual, we end this poll post with the Beatles’ poll, where it’s week 242 and week 11 of rating the Beatle albums. But for this week, something unusual…. we will be running 2 Beatle polls this week because of the album that we will rate. So the first poll asks: On a scale from zero to ten, how do you rate Side 1 (only) of the album Yellow Submarine? The second poll asks: On a scale from zero to ten, how do you rate the album Yellow Submarine (entire LP)?

So yes, 2 Beatles polls this week to cover this one single album. Why? Because, well... normally we always rate songs/albums in all of our polls for the rock music heard within, and for the Beatles poll, well the Beatles also have to be a part of the poll (of course), but on side 2 of this album they do not appear at all, nor does any of their music, other than some of the title track's music is heard on the last song. Side 2 has no rock music on it at all. Side 1 (which Poll 1 covers), is 100% rock music and 100% Beatles songs, so that side isn't the problem, and because of that, it gets its own poll. Side 2 is where the problem is, and why we have a poll 2 this week. I mean, we have to rate the entire album at one point, right? But Side 2 only contains music from an orchestra (which I and maybe some of you enjoy listening to once in a while), but this is a rock based poll, so how do we (or should we) approach a non-rock album side while voting? Do this. Just don't rate side 2 as a rock album, rate it as you would rate any other kind of non-rock music. Just rate it on how the music sounds to you and forget that it isn’t rock music. If you like listening to an orchestra play, you just might give it a high rating, if not, you won't. But just remember when you vote, you're not just voting in this poll on side 2 only, it's the entire LP that the second poll question asks for, so you also got to include your feelings for side 1 - which again is 100% Beatles music, before you come up with your rating. Actually that shouldn’t be too hard to do, if you rated side 1 a "10" and side 2 a "zero", your overall rating would be a "5", etc. But heck, if you really do dig orchestra music, you just might rate side 2 higher than side 1! So this is why we have 2 polls this week, I wanted to at the least see how we really feel for just the Beatles music on this album (as we normally do, since that’s what we are really looking for), but felt we still had to rate the entire LP too, even if half of it isn’t the Beatles music.

Anyway, Yellow Submarine was released in January of 1969, and is the 10th studio album by the Beatles, and also the soundtrack to the animated movie of the same name. The album contains 6 songs by the Beatles, with the title cut and "All You Need Is Love" previously being released as singles and "Yellow Submarine" also showing up first on Revolver back in 1966. So really there were only 4 new Beatle songs on the entire LP when it was released, and 2 of them were written and sung by George. Paul sings lead on only one song, that being "All Together Now", John on 2 songs - "Hey Bulldog" and "All You Need Is Love", and Ringo sings lead on the title cut.

You can view all the songs that appear on the album before you vote here.

Okay, to vote and rate Yellow Submarine , please use this link: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week's Beatles poll we answered this question On a scale from zero to ten, how do you rate the album The White Album (aka The Beatles)?

The White Album , did the best yet in the voting by far last week compared to the LPs we have already voted on (and we only got 2 or 3 albums to go). This LP is clearly loved by fans (and not just me!). 96.7% of the voters rated the double LP either a “9” or a “10, and that’s no misprint! 64.9% gave the album a 10, and only 1.5% voted to give the album a rating lower than an 8! Wow!

You can check out the full final results from this poll here: Beatles Weekly Poll – week 241. Or, you can check out the top pick at the Beatles Album Page, located at the domain’s Lennon Site.

Well, not only did the links to this week’s poll go up late, this poll post is going up way late too, but you know the old saying about being late…. As I like to note at the close of this post sometimes, regardless of which polls you vote in, be it only one - or all four each week (but again, this week there’s 5 of ‘em), I thank you for taking a part in the voting process!
