RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: FURGUSON, MO (NSC)

I think you are making some really good points throughout this thread Keno. From afar it looks to me that the true state of race relations in the United States has been brought to the surface by the killing in Ferguson, and subsequent events. Maybe many thought that things had changed, or maybe they just chose to ignore it.

Ferguson has acted as a catalyst for pent up frustration and anger. Same thing happened here in 2013 following the Police shooting of a young unarmed black youth in London. Pent up anger and frustration spilled out onto the streets in towns and cities across England. Yes there were opportunist looters, and copycat actions, but the anger directed at the police was real enough, and it wasn't just because of the killing of the young man.

It became clear in the aftermath that the police confronting them represented everything in society that hands them (youth, and black youth in particular) out a shitty deal.

Of course there have been 'race' riots on our streets before, usually in the wake of some police action that has ended in the death of an unarmed black person or some botched police investigation that has seen the killers of a back person, walk free. The reaction is always the same, hands thrown up in horror, how can this be, I mean, didn't we build them a new youth centre last time?

The approach is then, this will not be tolerated on our streets, we will come down hard blah blah, but there will be an inquiry, and recommendations will be acted on blah blah, community initiatives will be put in place blah blah.

Then it all settles down, and nothing changes, the Police go back to daily harassment, young black people continue to be proportionately over represented in just about every negative area you can think of, prison population, unemployed etc etc. But you are right to point out what people think Keno 'it's their fault, they start it', and if there are proportionally more of them in jail then that just shows they are committing more crime, probably because they are naturally prone to criminality, or maybe they just aren't clever enough, and get caught more often!

If proportionally there are more of them unemployed that will be because they are work shy! Proportionally they don't fare as well as their white counterparts in educational attainment? They're thick! They live in the worst ghettoised housing conditions? No ambition, plus at the slightest excuse they'll burn the place down! So on and so forth.

Could it be that our countries and their institutions are racist through and through, and that the cards are heavily stacked against? Nah, if you wake up and start believing that, then you have to do something about it, and God alone knows what that might lead to.
