I note that like mine all your candidates, good ones too (with the exception possibly being Lennon, although maybe on a good day for icons, yes), are all dead. I'm starting to think that along with all the other criteria being mentioned, being pan bread definitely doesn't do your chances of achieving icon status any harm.
Hmmm, I hadn't noticed that but you're right. Is being dead a requirement? Let's ask the question another way: is someone like Madonna iconic, or simply good at self promotion? Another thing I notice: all our real-life iconic figures met with an early death. So there may be a "romantic" aspect to it too, even when the death is rather ugly (such as Elvis').
Here's another interesting question: is Neil Armstrong iconic? Everyone has heard the "one small step for man" quote. And everyone has seen photos or film of Armstrong walking on the moon. But the man himself was a very private person who hated public appearances so his likeness is not widely recognized.
