I think you are right DA, I think there has to be some notion that the icons influence or whatever, was overall positive. Following on from what sway was saying I'm starting to think more about this question of iconic status and the cult of the individual, where they overlap etc.

You bring up Uncle Josef, and he might be a good place to start given the connection between icons and Russian(I he wasn't Russian)Orthodoxy, or Eastern Orthodoxy in general.
