RE: RE: iconic figures

Sorry manny, there was a second part to your question.

I suppose in the case of Jesus and the Virgin Mary it's because images of them are what icon's are, images of figures who are venerated by the Orthodox church for what it believes these people were and represented. These representations of Jesus and the Virgin are instantly recognisable just about anywhere.

I suppose some of the same elements have to apply to 'icons' in the wider sense. Certainly in the case of both the other examples I gave, their visages are widely known. In the case of Che that stylised picture of him based on Korda's (Hungarian?) photograph is everywhere, I remember having it adorning my bedsit wall when I was but a callow youth in 1970 London. I think back then for young people that image of Che represented their romantic notion of revolution. Of course irony of irony's, it is used now to punt all sorts of merchandise for a fast buck.

I think J.F.K. for a lot of people(an awful lot of people) worldwide, represented something similar albeit from a different side. He represented for those people I think, hope of a better way in a dangerous cold war world,.

When I was travelling round the Irish Republic in the late 70's, it was very noticeable that in every 'bed and breakfast' place I stayed, they had the photograph of J.F.K. right up there beside the one of the Virgin Mary, very 'iconic'. They also had little graven images of Jesus that were....wait for it....luminous, and magnetic. Very strange, but also much fun if you were in any way imaginative and irreverent.

Of course there is that Irish and Catholic connection with Kennedy, but would it be fair to say that a photograph of Kennedy could still be found in many American homes?

I suppose there is another connection between Che and Kennedy in that they were both young, handsome, and their lives ended prematurely the same way, gunned down. I think that would also be a factor that helped propel them to 'iconic' status.

I am of course an iconoclast, innit.
