RE: iconic figures

I think the first step would be to define the word "iconic". According to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary (bolding and italics mine):

1: of, relating to, or having the characteristics of an icon

2: a: widely recognized and well-established [an iconic brand name]

b: widely known and acknowledged especially for distinctive excellence [an iconic writer][a region's iconic wines]

According to this definition, here are my most obvious candidates:

Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, Elvis Presley, John Lennon, JF Kennedy (I hadn't thought of him before reading Pluto's post, but I think he is a good candidate).

I don't think that either Mick nor Keith fit the description, and I don't think the other three Beatles do either. I think that Jim Morrison almost fits the description but falls just a bit short.

"Iconic" means something more than simply "famous", so I think that few people really qualify. It has to be someone that will be instantly recognizable to his"her contemporaries, but to other generations as well. I would have included Rudolph Valentino in my short list, but IMO he doesn't meet my "multi generation" criteria.
