Fabian Strategy (nsc)

Sorry for stick my nose back in this, but I do find the dialog interesting.

Ok, politics aside. Forget Johnson, Nixon, Dominoe Theory, etc. Do you seriously think that if people are being masacred, we should ignore it when they ask for our help?

Well I will come back to the question I asked over a week ago, forgetting the "Domino Theory"? Then why were we there? What was the point?

As a number of people have pointed out, we can not be the world's police. As bad as that all sounds, it is true. People all around the world are doing bad things, things we don't like and we aren't doing anything about it for a variety of reasons.

War is simply violent politics. We can not go sticking our nose into other people's local politics simply because we don't like something. Besides plenty of people would point out that many people would never have been killed or massacred if we weren't involved. So who were we actually saving? People in general or simply people that shared our own political views?

Maybe you should pick up a few books. I wouldn't doubt that you thought Tet was a military victory for the VC because Cronkite said it was. You relied on the media, which never ever tells the whole story.

Pick up a few books? And so should you SRW. More specifically perhaps you should read a few books from people you don't actually agree with on the topic. After that, maybe you should go to Asia and speak with a few people from the other side. Have you done that yet? If not, how is it even possible that you have the entire story? You (SRW) clearly have this view about Vietnam and seem to dismiss anything that may be counter to what you believe.

Regarding the claim that we won Tet.... have you ever heard the phrase "winning the battle and losing the war"? By many factors, we clearly one that Tet. However it did convinced the American public that the war was not going as well as they had been told. In that sense we lost.

Bottom line, the Vietnamese employed a classic Fabian Strategy. The same basic strategy used by George Washington to win the American revolution. It really didn't matter how many battle we won. It was all about how long were we willing to be there? And at what cost? They won the war of attrition.
