The way our politicians played it out, yes, it was a tremendous waste. If common sense and logic ruled, the American/Vietnam War could have been easily won.
You really need to explain that a little further SRW? How could we have won the Vietnam War easily? Please be very specific? And please define "easily" as it relates to overall costs?
The only way the American cause could have been victorious in Vietnam was if we had the will and desire to stay, continue to provide combat troops and underwrite the cost of the war. And how long would that have lasted? Could we have done that? Yes, but for what reason? You, yourself, suggested we ignore the "domino theory" arguement. If that no longer is valid.... why are we there? We may not have wanted Vietnam to be communist. However, we can really want that more then the people that actually live there. Ultimately, the communist forces won. So what if we defeated them (our own definition) in every major combat operation, they won because they outlasted us. So unless we were willing to go on with endless support, there was no way we could have won in the end. No matter how one tries to spin it, there was no easy victory. The American public realized this after Tet and decided it was no longer worth it. Ultimately, we pulled out and the country fell to the communist.
I am sure if the British were willing to send more troops and keep spending money that they could have maintained control of the American colonies and eventually suppressed the revolution. But how long was that going to last? In the end, it just wasn't worth it to Great Britain. The same is true for the US in Vietnam.
