RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: sc

Those comments of mine weren't meant to be so specific, I was speaking in more general terms, and in general, when it comes to the Beatles, I'm sure this debate will keep cropping up every now and then, but I will never stop arguing my basic points: that the Beatles were overrated musically and in terms of musical influence and just because it might have seemed like they were the biggest thing in existence doesn't mean they were close to the best, and that lots of people knew it, both then and now. You are right about how just how big they were, and how crazy it was and I don't have to have been alive to know that. But still, they weren't the innovators they are made out to be and their influence to me is far more to do with commercial and business related successes than purely musical. I will definitely acknowledge that the fact that they were catchy songwriters, writing their own songs and the fact that those songs were successful blew open the doors of possibility for so many others, but so much more of the Beatles total and complete invasion into society and where they really changed the course of music had to do with George Martin and the label and their near-total focus on image and doing all the other ancillary things necessary to make it big. Image became everything. And it is all of that that--much more than the music itself--that mostly blew open the doors for everybody else. I will allow that the Beatles wrote amazing and original stuff and did influential and cool things--musically--but only from '63 - '65. After that, (and although Revolver itself is awesome, my favorite Beatles album) with very few exceptions, they weren't leading the way anymore at all and to me were not even keeping up with all the different directions music was going. They were relying on their prior exploits and massive massive fame, which, as I've just noted, were definitely not nothing. Oh, there's so much more detail that I could go into, but I'm not sure how tired people are for the time being....so anyway, I'm sure we will hit this again from time to time, but that is the gist of what I would probably be on about when we do.
