RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: beatles

That is exactly it manny, Lennon gave his opinion on the song long ago, he said.... "It was a throwaway. The only two versions of the song were Ringo and the Rolling Stones. That shows how much importance we put on it: We weren't going to give them anything great, right?".........so that's Lennon's thoughts on the song, it was a 'throwaway'.

The above quote was given to journalist David Sheff in 1980. Many people including yourself manny, I think, regard Lennon as a musical genius, and who am I to disagree with the many....so you would think if a musical genius thinks a song is no better than 'throwaway', the chances are, that is all it is...especially if that musical genius in part, wrote it.

That Lennon quote sort of reminds me of an interview with another musical genius, Mozart, in 1788. It's not recorded who conducted the interview but it was published in the 'Weinnerisches Diarium'. The interview centred on a rumour in Vienna that Mozart had been working on a piece that came to be titled 'Eine Kleine Nachtmusic'. When asked about it Mozart said... "Well it's true, I have been working on something now finished, but it's a load of old bollocks mate something I knocked out in a couple of hours really. I had thought of giving it to that old tart Salieri because he laps up anything I churn out. Problem with that however would have been getting performance rights money out of the old duffer. It would be easier to get blood out of a stone, I don't need the grief. So, it's lying on top of the pile of other guff that I haven't published. Maybe her indoors can make a few pfennigs off of it when I crump it, I'm not a well man"......that quote might have lost something in the translating.

Have you read Barry Miles' biography 'Many Years From Now' manny?

Interesting stuff, good read. Currently I'm reading Philip Normans recent biography on the man, 'McCartney'. Inevitably it covers a lot of the same ground as Miles did, but enjoyable none the less, and being a recent publication he is able of course to say more about McCartney's post Beatles career................

.....anyway, back to Miles' book. On pages 153/154 Miles gives quotes from interviews he did with McCartney on the topic of 'I Wanna Be Your Man', here are a couple of them............................."We wrote 'I Wanna Be Your Man' for Ringo because we wanted him to have a song on the album................So 'I Wanna Be Your Man' was to try and give Ringo something like 'Boys'; an uptempo song he could sing from the drums......."........another McCartney quote from the same book on the same subject, this time how it came about that the Stones got it after Lennon, McCartney, Jagger and Richards got together in London....."I think Mick said 'Hey we're recording. Got any songs?' And we said, Aaaah, yes, sure, we got one. How about Ringo's song? You could do it as a single."

I've read that Lennon and McCartney intended 'I Wanna Be Your Man' as a promo 'single' for Ringo, but I have never read anything by Lennon or McCartney that would substantiate that claim. The same article claimed that the Beatles made their first recording of the song the day after they gave it to the Stones, so therefore more than likely recorded it before the Stones. That claim appears to an extent to have some independent back up. In his wonderful book 'Revolution in the Head' (the book I pointed Fatmo in the direction of) the late Ian MacDonald on page 84 when discussing 'I Wanna Be Your Man' says.......'The recording of With The Beatles, suspended in August to accommodate a seven week tour, resumed the day after I Wanna Be Your Man was written. Chosen as Starr's solo spot for the new album, it was begun in a native Beatles version immediately-yet, for such a palaeolithically simple song, it caused them a lot of trouble, being laid aside twice and finished only during the last day of recording".

So there it is manny, we have the views of the two people who wrote the song, Lennon the musical genius believed it to be 'Throwaway', and McCartney who appears to have written most of the song prior to meeting with the Stones and finishing it off in front of them, says that it was written for Ringo.

I think as far as 'I Wanna Be Your Man ' goes, that's game, set and match, all that's left is the post match analysis if you can be bothered.

I think we make a great doubles team manny.......anyone for tennis?
