Early on in '64 it was the Dave Clark Five. They were an immediate success having hit after hit, a number of Ed Sullivan Show appearances, and they even knocked the Beatles out of the top chart spot with "Glad All Over". The Stones' emergence was more gradual that year, and they weren't on any sort of an equal footing with the Beatles until "Satisfaction" broke the following year. After that is was neck and neck between the two bands for a couple years until Sgt. Pepper, which spawned a huge second wave for the Beatles.
