I don't quite know what you mean by "parroting" but I will insist that although I wasn't around for Beatlemania I do have some benefit in coming around to the entire 60s objectively, in reading what people (musicians themselves) said about it both while it was happening and then again in the following decades. Also, I am able to analyze and combine what I read and hear without my own memories and nostalgia getting in the way and so in some ways you could argue that I have an even better critical understanding of it all..(or at least different yet also valuable). Because you know, hindsight and critical analysis matter. It does. Albums like The Velvet Underground and Nico and 13th Floor Elevators may not have gotten the memorization treatment in their day but they are now regarded as being at least as good and important as the Beatles. Just because something is popular doesn't make it good. A lot of people think Kanye West is the best and most important artist of the 2000s and beyond and that it is just a fact, but some of us don't need another 2 decades to know that there has been an awful lot of great stuff come out right in the middle of his heyday, and that maybe he's actually overrated a bit.
