tone is one way....on an electric, type of amp, what settings are chosen, how the guitar is set up, how hard or light the fretting with the slide is,the use of vibrato, if the slide being used is metal or glass etc all these factors contribute to the sound produced.... Ry Cooder's slide playing is instantly recognisable. Of course stylistically you might also get a clue as to who is playing. In tone touch and in style I don't hear anything on Jigsaw Puzzle that says Brian Jones is playing the slide part, because in all the areas I've mentioned, it sounds like nothing I've ever heard Jones play before slide wise. That doesn't mean it's not Jones, they are just indications that it might not be.
