I agree with your sentiments Jaded Faded, and I too am alarmed at legislation here that limits free speech in the name of creating a more tolerant inclusive society.
I think indeed that we all need to be Charlie Hebdo, and support the right to freedom of speech, and if what we say or publish offends some, then that's ok. I think though that we have to be careful how we show our support for Charlie Hebdo, especially where there are large populations of muslims, and France has the largest in Europe.
It's one thing to publish or say things that some might find offensive, and quite another to publish or say things aimed at any particular group that are an incitement to act against them. That can be in cartoon form, and I'm thinking of the Nazi portrayal of Jews in 1930's Europe. We all know how that one ended up.
There are plenty on both sides who would try to make gains from what happened in Paris, those who want more legislation to shut people up, and inevitably most of that will come from the religious side, and those who want to use it to set us against our muslim populations.
