The Charlie Hebdo people weren't walking by mosques or synagogues or churches hurling insults at the worshippers. They were putting out a newspaper which advertised itself as satirical and irreverent. Anyone who didn't like the editorial line or didn't care for the level of humour was (and still is) entirely free not to buy the newspaper.

They knew that there was a danger. But I'm sure they never in a million years expected what happened to them. The editor was under protection because he had been threatened. His bodyguard (a Muslim) was also killed in the attack.
