I've always thought, not that I've thought about it much, that the devil in 'Sympathy for the Devil' was in fact that devil, the Christian devil Lucifer as named in the song.
Listening to it, it seems to me that the devil lays out a long list of his works including religious wars, and his part in Jesus's fate, and states, specifically in relation to the death of Kennedy(s), that all of us are complicit. That seems to lead us into a consideration of the nature of 'evil' and of course it's opposite 'good',as you can't begin to understand one without knowledge of the other. Was it being suggested evil (and goodness) exists to one extent or another in every heart?
Anyway I'm the least qualified person here to get into a theological debate, I should think. However if I'm right, and the question as to the nature of good and evil is being raised in the song, then I would contend that that constitutes religious content, given that the subject has occupied the minds of religious scholars for many a long year.
