Religious folks always say to me, something like "we will see when we die if you are right or if I'm right", and I tell them, no, if I'm right, none of us will ever know it once we die since our brains will be dead.
That's pretty much how I see it.
As a kid, the school I went to was run by nuns (my folks weren't religious so how I ended up there is a long story.) They taught me about a god who was rather petty and vindictive and who kept score on some kind of heavenly balance sheet: and at the end of your life if your assets ("good deeds") outnumbered your liabilities you went to heven but if it was the other way around, you went to hell. Yet he was supposed to be all forgiving? It didn't make sense then, and it makes even less sense now. As a young child I was terrified because my family wasn't religious and we never went to church, so I was completely certain we'd all end up in hell.
How did the good nuns get away with telling horrifying stories to young children? It still pisses me off today when I think about it. And they're probably still at it, too.
Religion really can be the opium of the people, Ronnie. Karl Marx got that part right, at least.
