The devil is part of religion just as much as God and Jesus so yeah, that's a very strong choice.
But as us Stones fans know (and perhaps forget from time to time), the devil in this song isn't that devil at all, it's mankind. But what you quote about JC from the song could be looked at as religious, although it's not since MJ wrote about this event in a historic way, not a religious way. The entire song is written in this matter.
Most songs noted in this thread are more gospel only songs, not religious songs. Religious songs are mainly written about and for religious/Godly praise. Gospel songs can be written for that too of course, but they can also be used, and are used for secular reasons, and the main reason for why rockers use them. I myself love a lot of different gospel music (hell, that's half where rock music comes from), whereas I hate religious songs.
