As a kid, the school I went to was run by nuns
Me too, I went to Catholic school for grades 1 thru 3 and hated every minute of it. When my mom let me finally go to public school, I still was forced to go to Sunday school (aka bible school, the catholics just didn't call it bible school) until 6th grade. Yet thanks in part to the terrible Catholic school and those crazy nuns, I didn't believe in the religion by third grade anyway, and after my first year going to Sunday school, I stopped going in the 5th grade, even though my mother didn't know I stopped going. I also stopped going to church on Sunday around age 11, too, and she didn't know about that until I was about 13 or so. I would hang outside the church with my best friend Bobby and we would never enter the church, when the service was over we went back home. But I stopped believing in Jesus in third grade (growing up in a half Jewish neighborhood with close Jewish friends had something to do with that too, not just the school) and I stopped believing in any God period around the time I was 11 or 12.
How did the good nuns get away with telling horrifying stories to young children?
I never saw any "good" in those nuns, other than they were partly why I got to realize that Jesus wasn't the son of god.
Religion really can be the opium of the people, Ronnie.
And God is the adult Santa Claus, other than Santa is never mean, whereas God is made out by some of his believers to be as evil as the devil! If he did exist, I bet he won't be as crazy as some of his right wing followers make him out to be.
