As an atheist I can buy that completely Keno, absolute terms like 'good' and 'evil' mean a different thing to me than the source of Christian 'good' and 'evil'.
Keeping in mind the alleged source of Jagger's inspiration, which deals with 'good' and 'evil' and the action of one upon the other, I've always interpreted the 'after all it was you and me' line as 'you' being 'mankind' as you say, and the 'me' being the devil, rather than the 'you and me' being 'mankind'.
Whilst you and I as atheists have no difficulty in recognising that all events mentioned in the song were down to 'mankind' alone, in the context of the song, I've always interpreted it as coming from a religious view of good and evil, and the result of what happens when the devil finds his way (usually by trickery)into men's hearts. So it would be I put the idea there, and you carried out the deed.
That would be my interpretation of what is going on in the song, and why I felt that it had a legitimate claim to being included as a Stones song with religious content. Always fascinating to hear other viewpoints, and this is a song I reckon could throw up many, line by line.
