I agree with most of what you wrote.
The Who never came close to the Stones though. They had great moments, but the Stones bitchslap them every round. The R&R Circus myth that the Stones were beaten at their own party by The Who proved to be false when I finally got my hands on the damn gig in the 90s .
You could also argue on the Kinks being hard rock. Ray Davies' voice doesn't come close to Mick's on stage, and a lot of the Kinks' albums are more pop than rock in my book, though the line between the genres is thin (especially in that era). Were they better than the Beatles or the Stones? I don't think so. But I'm sure both bands have been jealous of the gems that the Kinks made (Keef must've drooled over the You Really Got Me riff, the Fab 4 must've dreamed about coming up with Waterloo Sunset, or the Village Green Album). It's a shame the Kinks aren't more popular among the masses...they really deserve more attention. Musicians luckily know how to find them though: I hear their influence in a lot of great bands from all around the globe.
