So I've read some complaints that we don't discuss The Stones enough. Well over at my Crowes site they were debating The Beatles vs. The Stones. Being a Crowes site most went for The Stones, but enough went for The Beatles that I felt compelled to spell it out. Here's what I wrote. Feel free to discuss/debate.
You know, you just can't argue against The Beatles. To borrow a political phrase, it's like arguing against motherhood. And when it comes to the 60's, the classic battling ground between these two bands, it isn't close. The Beatles own The Stones, period. You could even make an argument that for pure hard rock, The Kinks and The Who both outshone The Stones in that time period. But then two things happened in mid to late 1969 that no one could have foreseen. The first is that The Stones recommitted themselves to live rock n' roll, and the second is that Brian Jones was replaced by Mick Taylor. The Beatles were practically through at this point, and regretfully never toured their best material. The Kinks and The Who were still kicking ass. But none of that matters, because from July 5th, 1969 in Hyde park through October 19th, 1973 in Berlin, The Rolling Stones played THE MOTHERFUCKING GODDAMNEST HOTTEST NASTIEST MOTHERFUCKING ROCK N' MOTHERFUCKIN' ROLL the world has ever known. And even though they made Sticky Fingers and Exile, and even though they burned up the world again in 1977, 1978, 1979, 1981 and 1982, the live years of 69-73 is what makes them the THE GREATEST ROCK N' ROLL BAND THAT EVER WALKED THE EARTH. So I never get upset with Beatles fans.
