My no-frills assessment is that the Beatles were the best studio band, The Who were the best live band, and The Stones at least tied The Beatles for the best overall band, coming in at a close second place for each of these two general categories. The fact that The Beatles quit touring (and/or were incapable of duplicate their studio recordings sound live) drops them a half notch in my estimation. And The Who's studio recordings as good as they might have been, fell far short of their incredible live shows. The Stones' recordings and live shows of this era were not only excellent, but on par with each other, and consistency counts.
