You know the old saying that hindsight is 20/20, and that applies here perhaps. But he wanted to try to live as close as a normal life as he could. It was that or stay locked up in a cage for the rest of his life, like he was forced to do in the '60s, and he hated that and wanted out of the cage. How can anybody blame him for that? Yet on the night he was killed, he simply got out of his car and was walking a few feet from the curb to the front door when he was hit. The nut who killed him didn't even live in NYC, he flew there the day before from Hawaii where he lived, just to kill Lennon. So his walking around NYC had nothing to do with his death, being John Lennon had everything to do with it. Had he been even living in the middle of nowhere, like where I live, he still would have ended up a dead man, since his killer didn't care where he lived. He was gonna kill John one way or another. The only thing that would have saved his life was if he put himself under house arrest and went nowhere - ever.
