... 48 years ago today Brian Jones died. Back in 1969 things were of course very different, and news traveled very slow indeed. I found out the next day on the 4th of July holiday, while in Bayside, Queens, NY, at my cousin's house, a place I spent a lot of time at as a kid. I can recall the day very well, I was outside on the side of the house by their back door, I was in my early teens and teaching my younger cousin Gene all the things that a 12 year old boy didn't need to know about fireworks when I heard a yell come from inside the house from his sister who was my age, and she said real loud "Brian Jones of the Stones died!" I ran inside to see her sitting at the kitchen table with the NY Times in front of her, and in the lower right side corner of the front page was the headline about BJ's death and a photo of him. To say the least, my 4th of July holiday was ruined.
It isn't too often when you can remember exactly where you were and what you were doing some 48 years ago to the day. But I can do that with Brian's death, and the same deal is true for when JFK was shot dead in 1963, and of course when John Lennon was assassinated in 1980, too. Then there was 911, too, just not as many years ago as these other events. But all of those days were so sad and shocking to me and so many others, indeed.
Your fans will never forget you BJ, you started the Stones, and we will always defend you when any lies are told about you, too.
