You aren't wrong, that's how it was. The mob looked at Frank as a way to becoming a bit more accepted by the public, more so than they were. You gotta remember this was different times back in the '40s and '50s. Yet even in the '70s, when the very same crime family that Frank was closest to, the Gambinos (he was also close to the Genovese crime family, too), they still actually had a bit of a public following, by then thanks to John Gotti, who flat out felt he was some kind of a star, and he lived up to his nickname of "The Dapper Don". Yet it was he who had Frank's friend Paul Castellano killed so he could take over and run the family. It wasn't until Gotti finally got sent to prison when things finally changed for good as far as the mafia went. The Gambinos are still around today, but they are a shell of what they used to be in their heyday.
Only in Gasland can a thread about the Rock Hall turn into a thread about the mafia!
