RE: RE: Anyone Remember The Honeycombs? nsc

Joe Meek rented a whole floor and had an advanced recording studio (for the time) set up there. He told the Honeycombs to go on the stairs and stomp their feet to the music and he recorded it on microphones strapped on the stairs. It sounds a bit like Nellcote with people doing different things in different rooms.

I think for most of his life, Joe was a fairly quiet soul. You can see some clips of him on Youtube. He did groom the blonde bassist in the Tornadoes (a kind of in house Jo Meek group of session musicians) as a gay lover, but the latter was straight and wasn't having any of it. Ironically, the gun Joe Meek used on his landlady and himself was taken from Heinz Burt the blonde bassist, just a short time before the tragedy. Burt had told Meek it was a hunting rifle, but Meek had said it was too dangerous for him to keep. I think no one saw what was coming on the day he shot his landlady. He had been renting from her for years and although they sometimes argued, they had quite a close relationship. Meek was depressed by rising debts, the non appearance of any profits from Telstar due to the plagiarism case in the courts (which was later kicked out), the failure of his relationship with Heinz Burt and the need--more generally--to keep his sexual orientation a secret in a Britain where homosexuality was still illegal.

When it comes to crazy, I don't think Joe Meek was in the same ball park as Phil Spector.
