I have no clue about the UK, but where I was growing up, in the US, it didn't matter one bit had it been Paul Jones, or MJ, or any other guy with long hair. That was what got the parents all worked up back then, the long hair look on males, 99% of them hated it! Plus the entire band had that look, not just MJ, and the Beatles did also, and the US parents hated the look on them, too. I have to say to myself when I read totally false stories today about the Beatles in the early '60s being accepted by parents because they has a "clean cut look"! What?!?... That is a total BS statement (for US parents anyway), who hated the Fabs look as much as the Stones look. The Beatles weren't even close to having a clean cut look for 1964, no men up until then wore long bangs, none!, and again, they looked like girls to the WW2 generation and were made fun of by them. Of course, none of the young baby boomers gave a shit, their parents hating the look only made the look more popular, and in time almost all boys had the long hair look.
Was MJ more popular than BJ image wise? Not in the US he was, they were about even I would say, Brian may not had been the band's frontman, but everybody noticed him cause of his super blond hair.
But as Sway noted, the poll isn't about BJ vs MJ, that question will be asked in time, plus yes, for this question, image counts too, but only a bit (although perhaps more so in the '60s then in later years). As I noted a month ago when I first asked this question, everything counts, songwriting, live shows, work on their studio albums, work on anything related to the band, and yes, image too.
