RE: '60s Glimmer Twins/Moody Blues/VS poll/SPLHCB

I can agree with you in a narrow sense DA, that Jones was the 'image' of the Stones. He was very popular with fans especially female fans(I remember Jagger being more popular with us boys) . All the Stones had their fans, and they all appeared in the teen mags, but I think amongst them Jones was right there with Jagger in popularity. I also think you are correct that in a fashion sense Jones had an edge, although they all wore 'gear' gear which everyone tried to copy.

The 'image'I was talking about was the one as put forward by the mainstream media, the one that entered the wider public consciousness, and that was without doubt, Jaggers. It's hard to imagine that that sort of media attention would have happened if for example, Jones' first choice of singer i.e. Paul Jones, had taken up the offer. I think it was this focus on Jagger by the media that allowed Oldham to give them the 'would you let your daughter blah blah' type of headline. Without the prominence of Jagger in the media, it's more than likely that most parents then with daughters of marriageable age would have been asking 'who are the Rolling Stones', unless of course they had lost the battle with their kids, and allowed them to watch 'Ready Steady Go' or the like, where they themselves might have caught a glimpse, and made their snarky comments. You can bet it was Jagger who was the main focus of their attention. Of course being of that age, I had these battles with my parents to watch these shows, and I remember the 'look at the state of him, what's he meant to be?' type comments. I know if today I showed my mum photos of each individual Stone, and asked her who they were, she would ask things like 'was he a pop star', or 'was he in the Rolling Stones(she knows I like them)'? That would be till I showed her Jagger, and she would say, 'that's Mick Jagger'! I think that would hold true for most of that generation who are still alive, and were the parents of us teenagers who were into the whole thing.

So for me it was Jagger who was the difference then, that's why I chose him over Keith, by just being Jagger he made the big contribution. If anyone doesn't think so, just put Paul Jones in his place and ask if the media attention would have been anywhere near the same, would they have been anywhere near as big in the U.K.? If they had been given the chance, would they have become what they became in the U.S.(crucial)and the rest of the World? Highly unlikely I would say. Jagger is the enduring 'image' of the Rolling Stones'

Btw, I really like Paul Jones.
