I see where you are coming from Sway old son, but I don't know. The question just asked who made the biggest contribution to the band, it didn't say musically, and it didn't say it couldn't be image.
My argument would be that early on,the way Jagger moved and looked etc etc, was arguably the single most important factor in establishing the Rolling Stones firmly in the public eye. As important at least as the music, and the Loogsters clever publicity.
That period from 'Not Fade Away' through 'Lets Spend the Night Together' was incredible. You could not open a newspaper or a Sunday supplement without there being something on Jagger. Turn on the tv and it's the same with impressionists and comedians doing their exaggerated Jagger gyrations, and 'rubber lips' routines. At my school, and I suppose every school, there were dozens of kids who could do their 'Jagger', and at parties everybody was trying to dance like him. It's hard to describe just what it was like here then, but he was a phenomenon.
Thing is, he's never really stopped being a phenomenon. I have no way of knowing but I would imagine the majority of people on the planet have some knowledge of the Rolling Stones. I would be willing to bet that if asked most would say Mick Jagger was the person who defined the Rolling Stones.
It's been some contribution to the band from the man, and I'm sure without Jagger there would have been no Rolling Stones, not the Rolling Stones we know and have enjoyed for all these years.
